......way to go when buying the bow I choose?

By this I mean, with a 27" draw, am I better with a 60# or a 70# bow? bewildered

I have been looking at bows, as you know, but have also been asking some questions to the great folks that have been helping me out, more or less about the bows rather than about hunting stuff.

I have been reading that you should use the rule of thumb of approx. 6grns of arrow weight per pound of pull. With this am I better using a lighter arrow on a 60# or going a little bigger arrow and running a 70# bow?

As I am getting back into this, I am planning on hunting Deer, (BT, WT and Mule) Elk, (which I one day would like to go up into Alberta and take) Moose and possibly Black Bear.
(these won't all be taken in short term by any means!)

I guess what I am asking: If you were looking to get a bow for the above animals and keep it for a while, (not much into change) which pound draw and arrow weights will fit the need?

I realize that I can always go up in arrow weight to help out with the larger animals but, I would like to know if heavier (both draw weight and arrow weight) is really better?

(PS the 70# draw is not a problem for me!)

Thanks!!!!! beer

With Elk on the list, I'd get a 70 lb bow. you'll get better energy and if you're wanting to keep the same set-up, it'll make shooting the heavier arrows more effective when you get the chance to chase moose and bears. Plus, you'll be able to back the draw weight down to about 60 lbs if that's what will suit for deer.

Always get the heavier pound bow if you can, especially with a 27 inch draw. You can turn it down to 60 if you want as GD said, also with Elk and Black Bear on your list, a little extra KE does not hurt.

I pick a minimum of 70lbs on all my bows when hunting. I have a High Country Machined supreme at 80lbs. Two Matthews, Switchback at 70lbs., and a PSE Stratoflight Express at 72 lbs. They all shoot well at max weight but some bows may do better a few pounds off their max. I use mine on large plains game in Africa and big pigs in Texas, use on most a carbon express 350 hunter arrows and a Muzzy 125 3 blade. It is what works for me,,, I hear good stuff about slick tricks broadheads. You just have to put time in the range and see what works for you and practice which will equal success in the field..

I don't know anything about compounds, but can you get it adjusted for the weight you want at your drawlength?

smedley,

let us know how the new bow works! archer

calgarychef1,

Each bow comes from the factory with about 10 lbs of adjustment in draw weight. the weights listed are maximum, and you can usually go down 10 lbs from there.
